She is a wife; mother of 8, with a blended family; a grandmother of 7, …family is most important to her. She is a Christian and member of Christ Cathedral Church, where she serves as a praise/youth leader.
She was born at Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland, into a military family.
Her father served in World War I, World War II, and Vietnam. He began military service in the US Marine Corps and retired from the US Army. He completed a second career in the post office.
Her mother was an educator and trailblazer. She graduated from Shaw University and completed a career as an elementary school teacher. She was the first Black Girl Scout to integrate Girl Scout camps in North Carolina at Camp Mary Atkinson.
She is still a military Mom with a daughter in the North Carolina National Guard and a son in the US Navy. Military service and community service runs in our family. She met the challenges of single parenthood, and raised four children who now lead productive lives.
When her elderly parents needed assistance, she moved to North Carolina to care for them. She understands the challenges of healthcare in every season of life.
Professional
She graduated from Crossland High School in Temple Hills, MD, and obtained a Computer Science degree, graduating Summa Cum Laude from Strayer University.
Her career experience includes community college instructor, newspaper proofreader/editor, and community advocate.
She began her professional career writing technical manuals for a government contractor (CACI) and transitioned to writing government contracts. This laid the foundation for a 20-year career in non-profit consultancy, grant writing, and business ownership.
She authored the comprehensive guide "Non-Profit 501C-3, Easy as 1-2-3," guiding organizations in obtaining their Federal non-profit status. This guide includes research, government grants, and private entities, for organizations seeking fundraising assistance.
Most recently, she secured over $5 million in funding for various institutions. Notably, raised an impressive $925,000 in under 60 days for the City of Rocky Mount, supporting downtown revitalization efforts.
COMMUNITY SERVICE
She is the founder of the Cumberland County Community Watch Coalition, leading efforts to bring communities together and establish community watch programs. I served on the board of Adam Street Shelter, member of the Triple Nickels, and currently serves as Precinct Chair in my assigned precinct.
Community service includes an annual uniform drive for children, programs to increase voting participation, self-funded community cookouts fostering neighborhood pride, and collaborations addressing homelessness.
Her deep connection to District 43 is evident through her children's upbringing in the district, fostering a profound understanding of the everyday issues faced by its residents.
